Edinburgh Military Tattoo

IMG_2553

Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual show at Edinburgh International Festival (Fringe Festival) in August. Quoting from their site “Taking place on the esplanade of Edinburgh’s iconic Castle, expect an unforgettable evening of music, ceremony, theater and dance” it was indeed unforgettable evening. Not because the cold, wind, and rain that night but the performances is topnotch.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a collaboration of many countries; Scotland, England, America, China, India, and many more (I don’t really remember all of it :-p). The performances mostly a dance and music, well some of them are military so they “dance” on their own way. I personally like Chinese performance, Lotus Dragon Dance. They start with just a Lotus flowers and suddenly there are dragons, I’m like “where that dragons come from”.

When watching some of the military people, I found something interesting, I found blonde performer. Well, there are lots of blonde performers but not that blonde, just check my photo below.

At the end of the performances there are couple of fireworks display. It was beautiful although I had seen it like almost everyday because I live near the castle.

[DDM] Bye Intel NUC

As I wrote earlier in my blog post, I chose Intel NUC to replace incompatible Raspberry Pi 2. It’s not as cheap as Raspberry Pi 2 (the price almost ten times) so I need to inform my sponsor about this (so they can give me funding to buy this stuff). Unfortunately, today I received an email from my sponsor that they can’t give any funding to buy new stuff. If it’s cost less than 100 pound maybe I will use my own money but it cost more than 200.

I use Intel NUC so I can address portability issue in my project. I might not need it or at least I can just use another computer and pretend that the computer is portable enough. It’s not the device that matters but the system itself. I will talk to my supervisor about this, I hope we can think of a solution for this.

BBQ with PPI Edinburgh

Last Saturday we had another event for Indonesia’s residences in Edinburgh. Last event was held in Richmond Common Room but this time we did it in Heriot Watt University’s Chaplaincy about half an hour from Edinburgh city center by bus. It’s a BBQ potluck party so we have to bring any stuff like meat, chicken, drink, fruit, etc. My friend and I bring fruit and sambal (seasoning). We arrived almost an hour late. Even though we were late, we didn’t miss anything. Some of my friend got lost in Heriot Watt University. They stop in the wrong bus stop so they had to walk few miles to arrive there. It was hard to make the BBQ working because all the wind and a little rain shower not to mention the cold. But in the end, we did have a good event for all of us.

Boss On Top

This afternoon after daily mass I went to Arthur’s Seat to take some photos. It was my second time in Arthur’s Seat. Last time when I tried to hike there I got lost, well not really lost but just took a little detour that made me circle around Holyrood Park. On my way to Arthur’s Seat, I saw a guy wear formal dress suit heading Arthur’s Seat. I thought he just take a detour to go to his office but I’m wrong, he HIKE Arthur’s Seat. OMG, I just can’t believe it. It just uncommon for someone to hike a 251 meters hill wearing a formal dress suit. But I admit it, this guys rocks, he even beat me to the top 😀

Formal dress? why not

[DDM] Intel NUC Instead of Raspberry Pi 2

As you know, my final project not only addressing sound quality and natural interaction but also portability. At first when I come up with this project, I thought I can use Raspberry Pi 2 as part of my project. Leap Motion and Raspberry Pi 2 will become a perfect match to address this portability issue. After I do another research, it turns out that Raspberry Pi 2 isn’t supported by Leap Motion, at least that’s what they said in forum. They said that Raspberry Pi 2 doesn’t have enough juice to works with Leap Motion. Knowing that I can’t use Raspberry Pi 2, I had to choose another candidate for this portability issue, small but powerful enough to handle Leap Motion.

After some digging, I found Intel NUC. Intel NUC is a mini PC from Intel, small enough for my project and powerful enough to handle Leap Motion. Of course it’s powerful, it has core i3 in there. Compared to Raspberry Pi 2, Intel NUC is full fledged mini PC, so I won’t bother comparing these two, they’re just like apple and orange. And also, Intel NUC way more expensive than Raspberry Pi 2 :D. Okay, we’ll see how it turns out with my project.
